You are new to the workplace, or a few years in, and you are starting to realise that simply working hard is not enough. You want to make smart career decisions, but no one ever showed you how to think strategically about your path.
You are capable, qualified and consistently delivering, yet your effort is not translating into recognition, progression or pay. It is not about effort — it is about how your value is positioned and understood.
On paper things look fine. Internally, something feels off. You know you are capable of more impact, more growth and more fulfilment than your current role allows. You do not want to give up on your career; you want one that fits who you are becoming.
If any of that lands, it is not because you are failing. It is because no one ever taught you how to build a career intentionally.
After 15 years in financial services and 10 years hiring, training, managing and coaching professionals, five mistakes come up again and again.
I began my career in a highly competitive corporate environment with a strong academic foundation and a clear ambition. What became apparent very quickly was that despite working hard and delivering results, effort alone was not translating into progression, pay or visibility. It was not a lack of capability — it was a lack of understanding of how the workplace actually works.
No one teaches you how to think strategically about your career. No one explains how positioning, visibility and timing influence progression. And no one hands you the playbook. What felt like personal confusion was actually a structural gap.
Through intentional learning, mentorship and close observation of high-performing environments, I identified the patterns that consistently drive progression. When I applied them deliberately, the results followed: I was headhunted into an Executive Director role at a Tier 1 investment bank and promoted four times in three years, quadrupled my compensation over five years, earned industry recognition, and went on to write Visible Strengths and found a career development consultancy.
That framework is the spine of the MVP Accelerator. It is the work I now do with women who want to stop guessing and start building careers that grow in confidence, opportunity and income over time.
